Named after the waterbird, teal was first recorded as a colour in the 1920s, and became popular in interiors in the 1950s and ‘60s, but there is evidence of its popularity as a hue long before this. Egyptians revered teal as a representation of faith and truth, and the Tibetans held it as a symbol of infinity, evidenced in ancient caves and tombs.
Throughout history, turquoise or teal has been used to colour mosque domes, churches and state buildings.
